About Hawk Hill in Sausalito, California

Hawk Hill in the Marin Headlands is known for outstanding views and for viewing raptors. It is considered one of the best spots in the western US for spotting raptors during their fall migration. Many different birds of prey have been spotted here including falcons, eagles, vultures, osprey, kites, harriers, and many different species of hawks. Birding is best on Hawk Hill September through November.

This unique spot is one of the highest points in the Marin Headlands with 360 degree views extending to San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco skyline, Point Bonita Lighthouse, Mt Tamalpais, and so much more. It’s this clear view of the ocean and the surrounding area that made it a site for two large guns during the threats of World War II. Later it housed radars that were part of the Nike Missile Defense System for the same reason. The guns and radars are gone but tunnels and other concrete military structures remain on Hawk Hill.

Getting here is easy as the summit (just over 900 ft) is just about 100 feet above the parking lot on Conzelman Road. Most visitors to the Marin Headlands drive right by without stopping to see this unsigned highlight. See our map for the location and the parking area.
