About Kirby Cove Swing in Mill Valley, California

Update: Apparently the National Park Service has cut down the branch that held the swing, so it no longer exists. But the view is still amazing from this beach and worth the trip to see it.

One of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge is from Kirby Cove at the base of the Marin Headlands. On the far east end of the beach, there is a tree that the swing hangs from. The swing hangs fairly high off the ground, probably to keep it well above the high tide. To get on, pull the swing over to the tree root, which will get you higher off the ground. It will still require a big step up onto the swing, but it’s worth the effort!

To get here, park at the Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point on Conzelman Road. This is a popular tourist destination, so parking may be tough during popular times. Access to the beach requires a one-mile descent on the old Kirby Cove Road. On the way down, you’ll pass by the historic Battery Kirby.

Before or after your trip to the beach and swing, make sure to check out the viewpoint at Battery Spencer on the bluff’s edge, which is an easy 5 minute walk from the parking area. See our Kirby Cove beach description for more details.

Was it this beach, or another close by, that had lots of California jade? My mother and a friend used to go there in the early 1960s.
