About Mission San Diego de Alcala in San Diego, California

Mission San Diego, California’s First Church, is a State and National Historic Landmark. As the first of the 21 Spanish missions in California, it is known as the Mother of the Missions and is formally named Mission San Diego de Alcala. Founded on July 16, 1769 by Blessed Junipero Serra, it was eventually designated as a Minor Basilica in 1976 by Pope Paul VI. The Mission today is an active Catholic Parish in the Diocese of San Diego. The facade is beautiful and the gardens picturesque. Behind the new church visitors can see remnants of the older adobe structures which have eroded. The mission has a gift store where you pay a small fee to enter the grounds.
