About Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, California

This award-winning aquarium offers families an enriching, educational and entertaining visitor experience in its nearly 200 galleries and exhibits devoted to the diverse habitats of Monterey Bay. The aquarium is home to more than 35,000 animals and plants representing 650 species of fishes, invertebrates, mammals, reptiles, birds and plants found in Monterey Bay and other regions of the world.

One of the highlights of the aquarium is the awe-inspiring Open Sea exhibit. This million-gallon indoor exhibit features a massive floor-to-ceiling window that provides an uninterrupted view of the marine environment. Here, you can witness the graceful movements of tunas, sea turtles, and schools of fish as they navigate through a re-creation of the vast oceanic ecosystem. Other highlights include touch pools, auditorium programs, feeding shows, and the Splash Zone family gallery.

One of Monterey’s largest and oldest canneries, Hovden, is now home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
