About McAbee Beach in Monterey, California
McAbee Beach is located in the heart of the Cannery Row area of Monterey, CA. At high tide it’s a small cove with smooth boulders and just enough sand to be called a beach. At lower tides and in the summer months there is more sand to enjoy. The beach is in the shadow of restaurants and hotels, but is still a scenic spot. On sunny days if you are just walking around and shopping on the waterfront, it is worth a stop to sit on the rocks behind the beach. Scuba divers and kayakers launch at McAbee Beach when conditions are right. Old concrete walls and foundations sit among the rocks reminding us of the hard-working pre-tourism past here. The beach is named for John McAbee who bought the land at the cove and tried to make it a seasonal getaway for tourists in the early 1900’s. After that it was a Chinese fishing village. Cannery Row is now a thriving tourist destination with an interesting past.
