About Dead Man’s Beach in Whitethorn, California

Dead Man’s Beach is a spring and fall surfing spot in the Humboldt County resort town of Shelter Cove. It’s not a great beach for non-surfers except for fishermen and hardy experienced beachcombers. Be careful of the changing tides on this small beach which has rocky abutments on each end. It’s called Dead Man’s Beach for a reason. Getting to Shelter Cove requires an hour-long twisty drive from Highway 101 starting in Redway near Garberville. There are two ways to get to Dead Man’s. One is to walk or drive at low tide from the Shelter Cove Boat Launching Facility. Another is more direct but requires a hike down a rough trail from an overlook at the end of Cove Point East Road.
