About Elk Creek Beach in Elk, California

Elk Creek Beach is at the bottom of Elk Creek Gulch south of the small Mendocino County town of Elk, CA. This picturesque spot is a deep cove with a sandy driftwood-covered beach that wraps around a pyramid-shaped large rock. Elk Creek pools up behind this rock then flows around it and empties into the ocean. The beach access road is gated where it branches off Highway 1 and “private property” signs make it clear that you can’t cross this land to get there. Sea kayakers can launch from nearby Greenwood State Beach to get here, but currently there is no public land access to Elk Creek Beach. Like all California beaches, the portion of the beach below the mean high tide level is public. It’s a shame that one of the nicest beaches in this area is closed off from the public.
