About Point Buchon Trail Beaches in Los Osos, California

South of Montana de Oro State Park there are beaches and trails on Diablo Canyon Power Plant lands which are administered by Pacific Gas & Electric. To see the bluffs and beaches south of the state park property you’ll need to sign a liability waiver and then hike the Point Buchon Trail.

There is a short loop option near Point Buchon but a much better 8 mile long out-and-back trail beckons. It leads to beautiful views of eroding cliffs, sea stacks, and rock arches. Some beaches are visible from the bluff, but they are not accessible down the steep cliffs. However, the beach closest to the trailhead (Coon Creek Beach) is accessible from the Point Buchon Trail.

The Point Buchon Trail is only open Thursday-Monday from 8 am to 5 pm April-October and 8 am to 4 pm Nov-March. The daily hiking passes are limited to 275 people so get there early just in case it’s a busy day. You don’t want to drive all the way out there and get turned away.

Bikes and dogs are not allowed on the trail. The Point Buchon trailhead is at the Coon Creek parking lot in Montana de Oro State Park. Toilets are at the check-in station. Bring water as there is no drinking water anywhere on the hike. See the PG&E website for more information.
