About Point Montara Light Station in Montara, California

Point Montara Light Station is located between Montara State Beach and the city of Moss Beach, CA. The waves crash hard on rocks below the lighthouse grounds, but luckily there is a small sandy beach with access from the property. A footpath leads north from the lighthouse through a picket fence to the edge of the bluff. It quickly splits and the left trail goes out to a point and down to the rocks. The right trail leads back to a creek drainage and down to the beach. Even if you don’t venture down to the water’s edge, this is a good place to just enjoy the view, take pictures, and look for whales offshore if it’s their migration season. Gray whales migrate by Point Montara between November and April.

The light station buildings have been converted to a hostel called Point Montara Lighthouse Hostel which is operated in partnership with the state. Get reservations in advance if you wish to stay here.
