About Red White and Blue Beach in Santa Cruz, California
Red White and Blue Beach was once a popular clothing-optional beach and campground north of Santa Cruz, but it was closed by the property owners in 2008. In 2017 the property was listed for sale for $35M and it eventually sold to a private buyer in June of 2019 for around $24M. It will probably be a while until we know the fate of public access to this beach. Land Trust is trying to find a way to get access to the beach via adjacent state park land. Here’s an article we posted on the original listing and how the sale played out.
Unfortunately until the new owners open the gates or the California Coastal Commission steps in to restore access, Red White and Blue will remain one of the beaches you’ll never see in CA. It’s a shame because this is a large sandy beach located at the mouth of a creek that created this cove eons ago. The beach is gorgeous with vertical sandstone walls at both ends. A lagoon forms in the cove and was once a public birdwatching spot.
Laguna Creek Beach is the next public beach to the north and has a reputation as a clothing-optional alternative to Red, White and Blue. Also nearby is Wilder Ranch State Park with several remote beaches to hike into. If you want to do a drive-by to see where the Red White and Blue Beach access used to be, drive the Scaroni Road loop off of Highway 1 just north of Wilder Ranch State Park and look for a gate with “no trespassing” and “no beach access” signs.
