West Jetty View Beach – The Wedge

West Jetty View Park is located at the end of Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach, CA. The park is small, but the beach here is large. The waves at this location are large as well, especially when conditions are right. Local expert surfers hang out here and ride the wave called “The Wedge.”

There is a long jetty at the entrance to Newport Bay that sticks out from the beach and the reflected wave energy creates a huge swell – sometimes up to 30 feet high! Bodysurfers, surfers, kneeboarders, and bodyboarders have been using this man-made barrel wave for many years. They are very fun to watch from the beach.

The city of Newport Beach has established hours when boards are not allowed to give different users access and to minimize conflicts. Swimming at West Jetty View Park Beach can be dangerous because the same jetty-beach triangle that creates big waves can also create a strong rip current.

Get there by heading south on Balboa Boulevard until it reaches the harbor channel where the road name changes to Channel Road. At the end of this road is a grass lawn and a few palm trees where you can enter the beach. Look for street parking nearby as there is no parking lot.
