Located within the northern part of Encinitas, the funky beachside community of Leucadia offers small-town charm within 25 miles of San Diego. With three secluded beaches, a quaint downtown area, and beautiful views and weather, Leucadia is a prime destination for those wanting a place off the beaten track.

Beaches in Leucadia

Leucadia’s three beaches—Grandview Beach, Beacon’s Beach, and Stone Steps Beach—can be hard to find for those out of town; stairways lead down the bluffs from quiet neighborhood streets to the relatively secluded beach areas below. The first two make up Leucadia State Beach, a state park run by the city of Encinitas. The secluded status combined with the majestic waves of this part of the coast, creates a mecca for surfers from both near and far. However, the natural quality of the beaches provides a beautiful setting for day trippers as well.

Leucadia Surf School has surfing lessons for amateurs and experienced surfers. Visitors can also meander down the bluff-side sidewalk or rent a bike to take in the scenery. A weekend farmers market offers fresh produce and local wares, and an eclectic variety of surf shops, boutiques, and tattoo parlors line the main street area.

Dining in Leucadia

After a morning spent at the beach, many Leucadians frequent local fave Leucadia Donut Shoppe. For something geared toward happy hour and evening meals, Le Papagayo features Latin American cuisine. The Regal Seagull is a low key place to hang out and enjoy a beer and homemade gourmet sausages. For something a little more refined, diners can visit Solterra Winery & Kitchen with their extensive tapas menu and wine tasting.

Staying in Leucadia

Being the tiny beachside community that it is, Leucadia doesn’t offer a huge selection of hotels. Leucadia Beach Inn is walking distance to the beach and has simple yet convenient accommodations like in-room kitchenettes. Slightly further inland is Quality Inn Encinitas with its close proximity to Legoland Amusement Park. Or for something a little more romantic, guests can stay at the Inn at Moonlight Beach, a bed and breakfast style hotel just south of Leucadia.

Whether passing through or staying for a few nights, the charm and character of Leucadia is hard to beat. It’s a great place to take a break from the beach crowds and experience the true SoCal coast lifestyle, complete with friendly locals and a natural, picturesque setting.
