About Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park in Pescadero, California

Pigeon Point is known for the tall picturesque lighthouse in Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park, not for the beaches around the point.

South of the point is a beach known as Whaler’s Cove which is open to the public when the beach doesn’t have seals. Immediately north of the point is a small beach that is great for tide pool investigation at low tides.

The old lighthouse staff housing buildings have been converted to a hostel run by Hosteling International. The lighthouse tower is closed to visitation, but it is beautiful to see from the outside. There is an accessible boardwalk that leads out to the end of the point with an overlook to view waves, birds, and marine animals including elephant seals. Gray whales migrate past this point January through April and can be seen from the overlook.

The lighthouse grounds are closed to pets, but dogs on leash are allowed at the beaches. This state park is open daily during daylight hours and a visitor center and bookstore is open Thursday-Monday mid-day.
