About Bass Rock Beach in Malibu, California
Bass Rock Beach is at a signed but unnamed coastal access along Pacific Coast Highway not far from the Ventura and Los Angeles County border. The state has provided a concrete stairway that leads from a strip of shoulder parking on PCH to the sandy beach below. Erosion has undercut the base of the stairs so you have to jump or climb down on the rocks at the bottom. Waves crash on large rocks at both ends of the beach. The rock just offshore at the south end is officially named Bass Rock and the area around it is a known surf casting fishing spot. At low tides there are tide pools exposed here. Since this beach is right off the busy highway, it’s not much of a destination, but it makes a nice stopping point along this scenic drive.

I actually lived here in my camper back in the 70’s before we were called homeless. I got a job in Beverly Hills and commuted everyday, showered at Leo Carillo state park on the way to work. Lots of stories as various others stayed awhile. I’ll never forget playing in the bioluminescence on that beach. One side was suited and the other nude.
