About Sycamore Cove Beach in Malibu, California
Sycamore Cove Beach is a day-use area in Point Mugu State Park located in southern Ventura County and not far from western Malibu. The beach in Sycamore Cove is excellent, but the biggest draw to this spot is probably the adjacent campground with an extensive hiking trail network.
Trailheads for various trails can be found along Sycamore Canyon Road which starts across Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) from the beach parking area. The most popular trails in Point Mugu State Park are the Grotto Trail (easy) and the Mugu Peak Trail (moderate). The Backbone Trail also begins here and is the gateway into the Boney Mountain State Wilderness Area at the north end of the Santa Monica Mountains. Stop into the Sycamore Nature Center for more information on where you can explore in the hills above the beach.
Sycamore Cove Beach is a southwest-facing sandy cove that Pacific Coast Highway wraps around. It has lifeguards, picnic tables, barbecues, fire pits, and restrooms. Across PCH is the campground, the nature center, and maps of the hiking areas. Spots in the campground can be reserved through ReserveCalifornia.com. These camping spaces are popular so book way in advance if possible.
The Sycamore Cove parking lot is open from 8am to sunset every day.

This beach is decent and one of the few with fire pits. The biggest problem is the parking. The beach lot closes at sunset, forcing everybody to move their cars. The campground lot, which can be parked in using the same payment as the beach lot, but it’s usually full, and the nearest parking is 1/4 mile down the PCH. Why make everyone go through that. Please keep the beach lot open until 10p so that people enjoying a fire don’t have to move their cars.
The beach deserves a 5 star rating, but we come here twice year for 37 years. We noticed that shady is the most polite word I can use for them. For example, we were there super early like 7:00am to make sure we get a table. At about noon time a very inconsiderate lady placed her food over our grill. I called over a security to tell him the situation. His final words to us were, “If you both don’t stop arguing I will give you both a citations.” Conversation ended because there was something wrong going on the other side of the park. Well, that lady with her 6 children took our table, BBQ grill. We decided to leave. The biggest regret I have till this day is not getting the officer name and reporting him. Officer was angry from the get go. What I am noticing more now is young crowd of people in there 20s/30s age bring boom box and blasting the music so we cant enjoy waves or the water splashing. The Life Guard has no courage to say anything about it either. By the way 37 years ago hardly anybody would know about this little gem.
