About Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area in Calabasas, California
Located a short distance from downtown Los Angeles and some of L.A.’s cities and communities such as Santa Monica, Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is an amazing journey into a Mediterranean ecosystem containing plants and wildlife in a semi-arid climate near the Pacific Ocean. Santa Monica Mountains NRA runs nearly 50 miles distance from the Santa Monica Pier through Malibu and Point Mugu at its western beach beginnings to the Hollywood Bowl. It contains approximately 150,000 acres of land, plants, trees, animals, bugs, birds and flowers in a wilderness setting.
Hiking and mountain biking trails are abundant, over 500 miles of trails actually. Other sports are popular here including rock climbing, horseback riding, birding and camping. Campgrounds are available in the mountains and along the Malibu Coast.
The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area offers a diverse range of natural attractions and outdoor activities for visitors to explore. Some of the top destinations at the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area include:
- Malibu Creek State Park: This park offers stunning vistas of the mountains and is home to many popular hiking trails, including the popular Rock Pool and MASH site hikes.
- Solstice Canyon: This beautiful canyon offers a variety of hiking trails and scenic waterfalls.
- Point Mugu State Park: Located at the western end of the Santa Monica Mountains, Point Mugu offers stunning views of the ocean and several excellent hiking trails.
- Will Rogers State Historic Park: This park was once the home of the famous actor and offers visitors a chance to explore the historic ranch and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty.
- Topanga State Park: This park is one of the largest in the area and offers a variety of hiking trails, including the popular Eagle Rock hike.
- Paramount Ranch: This location has served as the backdrop for many famous movies and TV shows and offers a unique glimpse into the history of Hollywood.
- King Gillette Ranch: The former home and 588-acre property of the razor “king” has trails, park lands, and a viewpoint called Inspiration Point.
Acting as a cooperative partnership between federal, state and local park agencies and private preserves, Santa Monica NRA is comprised of lands that include numerous state parks and beaches, and former ranches.
