Carbon Beach – Zonker Harris Access

Carbon Beach in Malibu, CA is a 1.5 mile-long sandy beach in front of tightly-packed homes. There are only two public access points between all of the homes. The westernmost access is the famous Zonker Harris Access Way, named for the main character in the comic strip Doonesbury. Right next to the home at address 22664 Pacific Coast Highway is a gate and a ramp that leads to Carbon Beach. From this access you can walk west on the sand a short distance to the Malibu Pier at Malibu Surfrider Beach which is clearly visible from here. Or you can venture east for a long way to the other end of Carbon Beach. The Zonker Harris access has been in place since the 1980’s. The eastern access next to David Geffen’s house was added much later in 2007 when he finally allowed the public gate to be installed. Carbon Beach is a typically uncrowded nice sandy beach. Take care to avoid getting too close to the homes to avoid any conflicts.

Street parking is available along Pacific Coast Highway near the access and also on the second floor of the shopping center at 22601 PCH. The California Coastal Commission publishes a satellite photo map that shows all the beach easements for Carbon Beach.
