About Malibu Surfrider Beach in Malibu, California
Malibu Surfrider Beach is the popular sandy beach and historic surfing spot between the Malibu Pier and the Malibu Lagoon. Surfrider Beach is part of Malibu Lagoon State Beach which has another parking lot located next to the lagoon just west on Pacific Coast Highway.
The name Surfrider suggests good surfing waves, and with a super long right hand break, it’s an accurate name. The break at Surfrider is considered one of the best longboarding waves in the world. Beginners and surfers of all levels can catch a wave here. The history of surfing in Malibu dates back to the 1920’s and had exploded by the 1950’s and 1960’s when surfing in California was a subject of popular movies.
You can walk the shore, wade into the water, and even swim at Surfrider Beach. Just know that the water is cool so swimming is most bearable in the summer months. The lifeguard tower is staffed during daylight hours most of the time. Note that there are separate areas designated swimming and surfing.
The Malibu Sport Fishing Pier is a comfortable spot for resting with many benches provided and excellent views of the beaches and surrounding hills. Malibu Farm has a restaurant at the entrance to the pier and a cafe at the end of the pier.
The Adamson House and Malibu Lagoon Museum (covers local history and the birth of surfing) is at the parking lot located at 23200 Pacific Coast Highway. The nearby lagoon has walking trails and is an excellent birding location.
For Surfrider Beach find a parking spot along PCH or in the lot with an entrance at the Adamson House (parking is available dawn to dusk every day).
