About Boomer Beach & Point La Jolla in La Jolla, California

Boomer Beach, which is closed to public entry, is a great place to see sea lions, especially in the summer months during their birthing and breeding season. This beach is located at Point La Jolla on the exposed western side of Ellen Browning Scripps Park in La Jolla.

In September 2023 the San Diego City Council voted to close the point and the beach due to animal and human interactions (read careless idiots taking selfies with the sea lions). The good news is that these picturesque mammals are still visible from the walkway above the point. After seven years of closure the council will reconsider reopening the area to allow the public to descend onto the point and over to Boomer Beach.

If you visit Boomer Beach and want to be able to get down to the water and feel some sand, simply walk over to the east side of the point (feels like north) where you’ll find the much more popular La Jolla Cove. It’s possible you’ll see sea lions on that beach too, but it’s still open to the public. Stay back from them if they’re present and just use the zoom feature on your phone to take pictures.

Ellen Browning Scripps Park is picnic-perfect with wide open grass areas, picnic tables, benches, and a rocky bluff to sit on as well.

Point La Jolla is a popular place for scuba diving. If you are in town for diving or snorkeling, the best place to enter the water is at La Jolla Cove which still has easy access to diving destinations like the Tombstones Memorials just off the point. This area on La Jolla Bay is known as the La Jolla Underwater Park and is protected by the Matlahuayl State Marine Reserve, a “no take” zone.

Parking is problematic at Point La Jolla and all around Scripps Park in the summer months, but just drive around on Coast Boulevard until you find a spot.

The park and the entire La Jolla Waterfront is a great place for walking. Boomer Beach is on the La Jolla Coast Walk which can be up to a couple miles along the shore.

Grew up body surfing Boomer in the late 50s early 60s. Back from military service picked up the old break, mid 70s. Nostalgic ❣️
