About Fern Canyon Beach in Orick, California
Fern Canyon Beach Day-Use Area is at the north end of Gold Bluffs Beach where Fern Canyon opens up to the Pacific Ocean in northern Humboldt County. The Fern Canyon Loop Trail, with high fern-covered canyon walls, is a real highlight and makes a memorable hike from the beach parking area. Longer hiking and backpacking options and even mountain biking options exist from this trailhead.
On your drive to Fern Canyon Beach, you’ll spot Gold Bluffs Campground where you can stay overnight. North of the Fern Canyon Day-Use Area is Ossagon Creek Beach and Ossagon Trail Camp, a walk-in camping area for backpackers.
It is a long drive out here, but worth the all-day trip from wherever you start from. To get here from Highway 101 north of Orick, just turn onto Davison Road which turns into Gold Bluffs Beach Road and drive to the very end. The entrance station is at about four miles from the start of the road and Fern Canyon is at eight miles. A day-use fee is charged for all entering vehicles. Note that long RV’s and trailers are prohibited on this road. Fern Canyon is part of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.
