- The retreat has a restaurant on site for their guests
Hot Springs Creek Beach is at the bottom of Hot Springs Canyon in the Big Sur coastal region. Currently this entire property is owned by the non-profit Esalen Institute which operates a retreat here for self-learning and healing. This is a full-service facility with lodging and dining for guests who are participating in workshops and educational programs. Esalen has a spa, hot springs, bookstore, farm and garden, and an art center.
The name Esalen comes from the Esselen native tribe that lived in this area for about 10,000 years before being forced out by missionaries. Archaeologists have found many historical native sites near the creek canyon and Slate Hot Springs.
The shoreline below the institute is rugged and rocky to say the least. Unfortunately there are few easy access sandy beaches nearby. Pfeiffer Beach is about a 15 mile drive to the north and Limekiln State Park is about 11 miles to the south.
