About Limekiln State Park Beach in Big Sur, California

The small beach at Limekiln State Park sits in the shadow of a tall bridge on Highway 1 in the southern Big Sur area. It’s a rock and sand beach at the mouth of Limekiln Creek. While the beach in this state park is worth a visit, the main reason to stop here is to hike the trails.

An easy hike of about a half-mile takes you up a steep creek valley over three bridges to the large lime kilns that once produced lime for early development in the San Francisco area. A side trail branches off along Limekiln Creek to a stunning hundred-foot waterfall. Other trails in the area invite hikers to explore a grove of huge old redwood trees or venture out to grand ocean views. Bikes and dogs are unfortunately not allowed on the trails.

The Limekiln Campground, which was once private, is now operated by the state and available for reservations. Only 24 campsites, some on the beach and some in the forest, exist in this unique setting. Day-use parking is extremely limited at Limekiln State Park. A small country store at the Lucia Lodge is available just up the highway for camping provisions.
