About La Jenelle Beach in Oxnard, California

La Jenelle Beach is located at the south end of Silver Strand Beach in the city of Oxnard. The name comes from a ship called the “La Jenelle” that sank in 1970 at the entrance to the Port Hueneme Harbor. The hull of the former luxury cruise liner was filled with rocks to create the breakwater near the park. Rusting parts of the ship are still visible if you walk on the huge boulders. This man-made spit and jetty at the mouth of the harbor is a great spot to watch large ships coming and going. To get to the parking lot, take Ocean Drive to the south end at Sawtelle Avenue and turn right toward the beach. If the gate is closed, just park on the streets nearby and walk past it to the beach. The adjacent La Jenelle Park (often spelled Janelle) is on land owned by the California State Tidelands Commission, but it is currently fenced off and closed to the public.
