Las Flores Beach

Las Flores Beach is a narrow sandy beach below homes in east Malibu. The beach is located east of Las Flores Creek where it crosses under Pacific Coast Highway near Las Flores Canyon Road and the Duke’s Malibu Restaurant. Unfortunately there is no longer an access at the Duke’s parking lot and neither the state or Los Angeles County have provided an official accessway to this beach.

A few locals know about a small unlocked gate next to a wood power pole at the address 20466 Pacific Coast Highway. This route requires a scramble down the bluff through Caltrans property to a fine little beach. Just note that nearby homeowners frequently lock off unofficial accesses like these or put up signs making them look illegal.

The closest “official” public gate is at Big Rock Beach (20000 PCH) where you could walk to Las Flores Beach at low tides. It is possible to walk from Big Rock all the way to David Geffen’s house on Carbon Beach to exit the public gate there. That is a sandy and rocky walk of about 2.7 miles (avoid high tide).

All California beaches are public property below the mean high tide level. The mean high tide level is at the back of Las Flores Beach so if you can get in here, it’s entirely a public beach.

UPDATE: In 2021 an appeals court upheld a $4 million fine imposed by the California Coastal Commission on the owners of the house at 20802 Pacific Coast Highway for blocking a public access to Las Flores Beach. Hopefully the gate next to their expensive vacation home rental will be unlocked and the pathway will be restored soon.
