About Leo Carrillo State Park – Staircase Beach in Malibu, California

Staircase Beach is a little-used area within Leo Carrillo State Beach in western Malibu. Surfers are the main visitors to this spot located north of the park’s popular North Beach.

Access is from the parking area next to the state park manager’s residence at 40000 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. Another way to explore Staircase Beach is to walk on the sand from the North Beach parking lot which is inside the main state park entrance. Both lots charge for day-use parking although there are free spots along the highway shoulder.

There are no facilities at this location and the beach is much narrower than both North Beach and South Beach. A trail zig-zags down the bluff face from the parking lot. Ironically there is no staircase.

It can be quite rocky at Staircase Beach so head a little ways south if you are looking for more sand to lay out on. There’s a hidden sandy area about 200 yards south of where the Staircase access hits the shore.

Dogs are allowed on the beach if they are on leash, but don’t go south of lifeguard tower number 3 if you have a dog with you.
