Portuguese Bend Cove Beach

Portuguese Bend Cove Beach is below the South Bay Archery Club in Rancho Palos Verdes. This coastal land is protected for public use in Abalone Cove Reserve. The archery club uses the bluff property and has the right to lock the gate at the access road. This road is called the Bow and Arrow Trail on park maps and signs.

This small beach on Portuguese Bend Cove is on the west side of Inspiration Point which separates it from Sacred Cove on the other side. At high tide there is very little beach, but at low tides there are tide pools exposed. Sea caves and tunnels exist below the end of the point and you can peer into them when the tide is out. Sacred Cove has good access to sea caves at the point as well.

The only public parking for Portuguese Bend Cove Beach is at Abalone Cove Shoreline Park along Palos Verdes Drive South. A fee is charged for parking and the city has strict hours. It’s quite a trek from this lot, but it makes a nice loop to hike the undulating trails to Portuguese Cove and then return along the road.
