Take a quick 45 minute drive from Santa Barbara on State Highway 154 and you’ll arrive in what appears to be a foreign country. But it’s actually the charming village of Solvang, which looks and feels like Christmas all year. And while it isn’t always easy to pry yourself away from the beach on your vacation, you won’t want to miss a day trip to this beautiful little Danish city.

Mission Drive is Solvang’s Main Street. Lined with souvenir shops, unique boutiques, wineries, art galleries and Mom and Pop restaurants, you’ll love exploring the downtown area.

Solvang is most famous for its bakeries. They’re known for serving authentic Danish treats like aebleskivers (Danish pancakes) and other tempting pastries, and they’re a must. Save some room in your bags and your stomach, because you’ll want to visit as many as possible.

As you stroll the village, look for Danish icons like the Little Mermaid Fountain, giant red clog and windmills.

This city is also paradise for wine lovers. Given the fact that it’s near the heart of California wine country, this isn’t surprising. With more than a dozen tasting rooms to choose from, you’re sure to find plenty of varieties of vino you enjoy.

Beaches are nearby along the south facing Santa Barbara County coastline. Remote beaches can be found along the shore between Gaviota State Beach and Goleta. Popular beaches also line the waterfront of Santa Barbara and Montecito.

Solvang makes the perfect place for a romantic getaway, but it’s also great for families and groups of friends. Between the local amenities and the nearby outdoor activities, you’ll find plenty to do.
