About Big Creek Cove Beach in Big Sur, California

Big Creek Cove Beach is under the Big Creek Bridge on Highway 1 along the Big Sur Coast. Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve is the land area adjacent to the creek and the California marine protected areas named Big Creek State Marine Reserve and Big Creek State Conservation Area. These marine areas are administered by the California Department of Fish & Game. Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve is part of the University of California Natural Reserve System and run by the University of California Santa Cruz. The entrance is gated but schools and other qualified visitors can apply for access to use the reserve for educational and research purposes. Public access to the reserve and the beach under Big Creek Bridge is unfortunately otherwise off-limits to the general public. There are pull-out parking areas at both ends of the arched concrete bridge over Big Creek for drivers to stop and take photographs. A good substitute spot nearby is Limekiln State Park which has a similar sandy beach in a deep cove below a high bridge.
