About Fletcher Cove Beach (Pillbox) in Solana Beach, California
Fletcher Cove is Solana Beach’s main central beach park located a couple blocks west of the intersection of Highway 101 and Lomas Santa Fe Drive. The cove is also known locally as Pillbox, a nickname for the World War II concrete gunnery installations on the bluff. Surfing, sunbathing, and picnicking in the park are optimal at Fletcher Cove.
The beach in Fletcher Cove isn’t big, but when the tide is up, the other beaches in Solana Beach might be under water and some of Fletcher won’t be. When the tide isn’t high, you can walk or run the sandy beach north to little-known Tide Beach Park or south all the way to Del Mar North Beach.
Fletcher Cove Park is a wonderful little park with grassy areas, a kids play area, basketball court, and picnic tables that look out over the ocean. Lifeguards are on staff year-round at this family-friendly beach.
Watching sunsets is a Fletcher Cove pastime. There’s a viewpoint at the top of the bluff north of the park next to the Fletcher Cove Community Center that has benches and tables that are perfect for watching sunsets.
Parking is available in a lot at adjacent to the park at 111 S Sierra Avenue in Solana Beach.
