Main Beach in Laguna Beach

Main Beach is the simple name given to the main centrally-located city beach in Laguna Beach, California. Main Beach is an above average sandy beach in a broad cove that faces southwest. It’s so far above average that it’s considered one of the best beaches in Southern California.

Main Beach has a grass park located where Broadway Street (Hwy 133) tees into South Coast Highway (Hwy 1) in downtown Laguna Beach. The park offers a wooden boardwalk, basketball courts, sand volleyball courts, a play area for children, and a wide sandy beach for sunbathing.

Lifeguards watch the beach from a tall white tower near the middle of the beach. This two-story tower, which looks more like a short lighthouse, has a sign that reads Laguna Beach Lifeguard Department Est. 1929. It’s a focal point of the beach to say the least

After it rains a creek appears out of nowhere and will flow out from under the park and cross over the sand. Don’t swim near this creek if it’s flowing as bacteria will be present from street runoff.

Surfing is not allowed in the summer months at Main Beach, but it is just to the north at Rockpile Beach where swimming is not allowed (but tidepooling is top notch). Above Rockpile Beach is picturesque Heisler Park which has walking paths, many art installations, and outstanding views. South of Main Beach there is a one-mile long stretch of connected beaches starting with Sleepy Hollow Beach that can be walked at low tide.

For parking near Main Beach, search for an open metered space along Highway 1 and the many side streets.
