California coast

Bodega Bay is one of Northern California’s hottest coastal destinations, and it’s no surprise as to why. With its windswept dunes and peaceful atmosphere, the bay serves as the perfect place to de-stress and experience some authentic coastal culture. Here’s a suggested Sonoma coastal weekend getaway to Bodega Bay.

Visitors will find many different places to rest while in Bodega. The Inn at the Tides is a spa-like retreat in the dunes, prized for the solitude it offers. Travelers who want full luxury will find the accommodations at Bay Hill Mansion Bed and Breakfast to be utterly delightful. Those looking for a more rustic experience can hang their hats at the Chanslor Guest Ranch. Coming in 2015, Chanslor will be offering camping cabanas, allowing for visitors to get in touch with Bodega’s nature without having to weather the elements.

Love seafood? Then Bodega Bay is the place to be. Everyone who passes through leaves raving about the local clam chowder, which is made with clams hauled in from the bay daily. Grab your chowder and other freshly caught eats at the Spud Point Crab Company, Fishetarian Fish Market, or Lucas Wharf Restaurant & Bar, as well as the area’s other excellent restaurants.

Outdoor enthusiasts will thrive with all of the activities available in Bodega Bay. Go horseback riding on the beach, dunes, and hills. Daily trail rides are offered by Horse N Around. There’s also plenty to do on the water, including whale watching, sailing tours, and fishing charters. Keep in mind that it can be harder to book these activities on the weekend in the high season, particularly if you’re looking for solo experiences. The Bodega Marine Laboratory offers tours on Fridays, during which visitors can interact with marine wildlife and learn about ocean science.

When it comes to beaches, Bodega Bay has a wealth of great spots to explore (see all 25 beaches near Bodega Bay). Schoolhouse Beach is well loved for its teeming tide pools and rocky shores. The majestic Bodega Head Beach is a wild beach with stunning views and beautiful seaside hiking trails. Nearby Salmon Creek offers bird-watching and a long sandy beach to explore.
