About Jalama Beach County Park in Lompoc, California

Jalama Beach spans the cove at the mouth of Jalama Creek at the site of a historic Chumash Indian settlement named “Halama.” Now this site is a popular Santa Barbara County park with a campground, glamping facilities, and day-use beach access. It’s one of the best beaches in California.

The campground at Jalama Beach County Park is open to tent and RV campers and even has seven cabins available to reserve. On site there is a camp store with sundries, food, beer, and wine. At the store building there is a restaurant called the Jalama Beach Grill which has a “World Famous Jalama Burger” plus seafood other tasty meals for breakfast, lunch, and early dinner.

Jalama Creek flows under a train trestle and pools up on the north side of the park where birds can be found. A trail meanders through the dunes near the creek. The public beach continues below cliffs northward in front of Vandenberg Air Force Base, and to the south in front of the former Cojo-Jalama Ranch, which is now known as the Jack & Laura Dangermond Nature Preserve. Except at high tide, there are miles of beach to explore here. At low tide look for tidepools below the bluffs north of the creek.

If you like to surf or fish, bring your board or tackle along with your camping gear. Jalama Beach has good waves and is popular for surf-casting too.

To get to Jalama Beach County Park, turn off Highway 1 south of Lompoc onto Jalama Road and follow it all the way to the ocean. It’s a long winding drive of nearly 15 miles from the highway which can be slow going in an RV or in a car stuck behind one. It must be super fun in a sports car or on a motorcycle, but take your time and enjoy the scenic drive.

I should do a review that says this place stinks, but it’s so incredible that it’s hard not to tell the truth. We hope to go back again to stay for a while longer. The one time we were here it was so pretty and romantic.
