Cabrillo Beach (Ocean Beach), San Pedro

Cabrillo Ocean Beach (aka Oceanside) is on the ocean side of Cabrillo Beach Park in the San Pedro district of Los Angeles. The park also has a beach on the inside of the jetty called Harbor Beach. Both these beaches benefit from a well-maintained park with grass areas, picnic tables, a playground, volleyball courts, and restrooms.

The picturesque and recently restored Cabrillo Beach Bathhouse is between Ocean Beach and Harbor Beach. There you’ll find restrooms and showers. The large interior space is used for events.

Ocean Beach can be rough sometimes with waves high enough to attract local surfers. The safer swimming beach at this park is on the harbor side, however that beach often has poor water quality, especially after storms. Just check in with the lifeguards before entering the harbor water.

When the water at ocean beach is relatively calm (which is typical), beginner scuba divers can enter to find sand dollar beds in the shallow sandy bottom.

It is possible to explore west of Cabrillo Ocean Beach by walking on the rocky shoreline toward the bluffs at Point Fermin below the “Sunken City“. This is easiest and safest during lower tides.
