About Catalina Harbor on Catalina Island in Avalon, California

Catalina Harbor is one of the “Two Harbors” near the town of Two Harbors on Catalina Island. The other harbor is Isthmus Cove where the Catalina Express ferry docks in Two Harbors. These two coves are back to back with a half-mile wide isthmus between them.

Catalina Harbor a.k.a. “Cat Harbor” is the deepest cove on the island and provides excellent protection for boats anchored or moored there.

Ballast Point is a sand spit that sticks out into the harbor and opposite that on the north side of the cove there is an old boat ramp at an area known as Wells Beach.

Cat Harbor doesn’t have a sandy beach per se but there are many great places to walk, take pictures, and rest along the shore. On summer weekends a shuttle operates between the town and the main dock on Catalina Harbor, but it’s a pleasant walk when it’s not too hot out.

You might see buffalo (American Bison) roaming in the fields near the cove. Fourteen buffalo were were left on the island after being used in a movie that was shot here in 1924.

Catalina Express ferries depart daily to Two Harbors from the mainland in the San Pedro District of Los Angeles.
