Point St. George Beach in Crescent City, California

Point St. George is a prominent rocky point about three miles north of Crescent City. The Point is where the St. George Reef Lighthouse keepers lived when they were ashore back when this lighthouse was manned (from 1891 until 1975). In 1995, it was decommissioned and completely abandoned. The historic lighthouse is six miles offshore on the Dragon Rocks northwest of the point, but it is visible in the distance on a clear day (bring binoculars or a telephoto camera lens). This lighthouse, which is one of the tallest in California, is under restoration by a non-profit group who intends to provide tours by helicopter.

To get to this beach from Crescent City, drive north past beautiful Pebble Beach on Pebble Beach Drive, which you can’t miss on the western side of town, and continue to the end following signs to the point. A tall radio tower is visible as you approach and an old Coast Guard building sits next to the parking lot. The land at the point is actually part of Tolowa Dunes State Park. From the parking lot it is just a short walk to Point St. George Beach straight ahead. The wide beach continues north into Tolowa Dunes State Park and beyond. Tide pools exist at the south side of the point, just look for a protected cove that is safe from the wild ocean waves. White Rock is a prominent rock west of the point that has an arch in it. The Del Norte County Airport is nearby so you might see and hear planes taking off while you are at Point Saint George.
