About Point St. George Beach in Crescent City, California
Point St. George is a prominent rocky point about three miles north of Crescent City. The Point is where the St. George Reef Lighthouse keepers lived when they were ashore back when this lighthouse was manned (from 1891 until 1975). In 1995, the lighthouse was decommissioned and completely abandoned. The historic lighthouse is six miles offshore on the Dragon Rocks northwest of the point, but it is visible in the distance on a clear day (binoculars or a telephoto camera lens can help). This lighthouse, which is one of the tallest in California, is under restoration by a non-profit group who intends to provide tours by helicopter.
To get to Point St. George Beach from Crescent City, drive north past beautiful Pebble Beach on Pebble Beach Drive, which you can’t miss on the western side of town, and continue to the road’s end following signs to the point. A tall radio tower is visible as you approach and an old Coast Guard building sits next to the parking lot. The land around the point is now part of Tolowa Dunes State Park.
There are two beaches at Point St. George. The one north of the point is best accessed from the main parking lot described above. From there it’s just a short walk to Point St. George Beach straight ahead. This wide beach continues north into Tolowa Dunes State Park and beyond.
The beach south of the point is a smaller and known for excellent tidepools and lots of driftwood. It has many rocks in the surf, including White Rock about 1000 feet offshore which has a rock arch in it. This beach has a more direct access from a gate on N Pebble Beach Drive about a half-mile before the end of the road (room for just two cars).
The Del Norte County Airport is nearby so you might see and hear planes taking off while you are at Point Saint George.
