There are some very well known hotels and resorts on the California Coast (See related: Best Beach Resorts in California), such as the Hotel del Coronado and the Hotel Laguna, that get a lot of attention in the travel industry. And while they absolutely deserve that positive press, we’d also like to call out a few coastal hotels in California that tend to be a bit more off the radar.

Some of these hotels are easy to spot, while some require a bit of driving from the coastline, but all of them are wonderful places to stay.

Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur

Perched high atop the cliffs of Big Sur, the Post Ranch Inn is an incredibly majestic place. It’s the ultimate destination for a romantic, luxurious getaway, especially if you crave peace and quiet. Amenities include daily free breakfasts, nature walks, yoga classes, a beautiful restaurant, a spa, and a pool that overlooks the ocean.

Half Moon Bay Lodge

Half Moon Bay Lodge is located in Half Moon Bay, about 50 minutes south of San Francisco. This hotel sits in the shadow of its high profile neighbor, the Half Moon Bay Ritz-Carlton. This hidden gem has all the comforts of home (WiFi, flatscreen TVs, fireplaces) and also includes some luxuries like plush robes and jacuzzis. Room rates here are good for what you get in return and include a complimentary continental breakfast.

Upscale and luxurious without feeling pretentious, the Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa is totally underrated. Perched on a historic beachfront property on Cannery Row, this warm, inviting resort is the kind of place you never want to leave. And with four dining options, an onsite spa and a host of other amenities, parting really will be sweet sorrow.

Harbor View Inn, Santa Barbara

With so many beautiful hotels in the Santa Barbara area, it can be tough to choose where to stay. But it’s tough to top the Harbor View Inn, which sits directly on the beach and offers rooms with private patios or balconies. Amenities include a fitness center, a beautiful pool, and a pool bar and onsite restaurant. They also have a beautiful spa.

Cottage Inn, Pismo Beach

The Cottage Inn in Pismo Beach is charming, inviting and reasonably priced, especially given its seaside location. The newly renovated property is set against the dramatic backdrop of the lapping waves and golden bluffs of the ocean, and the hotel itself offers free parking, complimentary daily breakfast and fireplaces in every room.

La Jolla Inn

Often overshadowed by its nearby larger San Diego resorts, the cozy La Jolla Inn is a true gem. This boutique hotel offers everything from standard rooms to ocean view suites, and their sundeck is perfect for relaxing on a warm evening or renting for your private party.
