About Bear Harbor Beach in Whitethorn, California

Bear Harbor Beach is a small south-facing beach in Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. This dark sand beach is somewhat protected from wind and waves rolling onshore from the west. During low tide and good weather you can beachcomb north and south along the shore. There are several campsites nearby including Orchard, Railroad, and Bear Harbor Camp so consider tent camping for a while. The Lost Coast Trail passes through here and heads south to Wheeler Beach and several other beaches. From the Needle Rock Visitor Center parking area to Bear Harbor Beach it is about a 3-mile walk via the Lost Coast Trail. If the rest of the road is open it’s only a half-mile walk, but don’t count on it.

Getting to the trailhead for Bear Harbor Beach requires a long drive from the town of Garberville on Highway 101 to this area and the road is closed in the winter. The roads are not RV or trailer friendly.
