About La Jolla Caves Beach in La Jolla, California
La Jolla Caves Beach is a hidden rocky beach between La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores Beach. During low tides you can walk here from La Jolla Shores, but at any time access to this beach is best by sea kayak, SUP, or similar water-based means.
It’s a rocky beach that isn’t suitable for sunbathing, but the real draw here is the cluster of sea caves at the north end that are accessible at low tides. The much larger caves south of the beach and below the Coast Walk Trail are impressive too, but they can’t be reached on foot (they are known as the Seven Caves). Take a guided kayak tour from La Jolla Shores to visit La Jolla Caves Beach and the caves.
For those who don’t want to kayak, there is an observation platform in the largest La Jolla cave, called Sunny Jim Sea Cave, that can be reached by going through a tunnel that starts in The Cave Store. Other caves that include Arch Cave and Clam’s Cave are only accessible from the water. Trails and sidewalks near the store lead to vantage points to photograph the caves and rock arches in the area.
The California Coastal Commission has been fighting for our right to use a public easement at 7957 Princess Street. In 2013 the CCC won a court judgment against the owner who was blocking access. It appears that a new stairway will be built and a gated public entrance will be installed. Parking is not allowed on Princess St so visitors to La Jolla Caves Beach will have to walk here when this is finally opened.
