About Point Fermin Park Beach in Los Angeles, California
Point Fermin Beach is below the steep bluffs of Point Fermin Park and Lighthouse in the San Pedro District of Los Angeles. The beach here isn’t sandy, but the rocky beach offers great beachcombing and tide pools to explore.
There are two trails that go down to the shoreline from the west end of the park along Paseo Del Mar, one at Leland Street and one that begins at Meyler Street or Roxbury Street. This area is labeled Wilders Addition Park on Google Maps.
The city-owned and operated Point Fermin Park has an historic and picturesque lighthouse, a grass park, nice facilities, walking paths and excellent ocean views. There is no beach access from the park as the cliffs are too steep. Park hours are 6:30am to 10pm daily but the parking lots are only open from sunrise to sunset.
East of Point Fermin is Sunken City, the site of a large slow-moving landslide that devastated a neighborhood starting in 1929. All that is left are the remains of concrete foundations that are now covered in graffiti. It’s possible to climb over the park wall and enter this area, but it is signed “No Trespassing” and the police do monitor the area and give out citations. We don’t recommend visiting this area, but if you want to look into it, head over to South Carolina Street and walk along the fence. Access to the rocky beach below Sunken City is possible and legal from Cabrillo Beach (avoid high tide).
Parking for Point Fermin Park can be found along Paseo Del Mar and other adjacent streets. Across Paseo Del Mar and on Gaffey Street are parking lots with access to Fort MacArthur Museum, Battery Osgood-Farley Historic Site, Joan Milke Flores Park, and Angels Gate Park (including the Korean Friendship Bell) which has outstanding views of the area.
