About Shark Harbor on Catalina Island in Avalon, California

Shark Harbor is a small beach on the southwest side of Catalina Island. Shark Harbor is adjacent to the popular beach at Little Harbor Campground. These two beaches are separated by a rock called the “whale tail” which looks like a whale’s tail from above. People walk out on this rock to take pictures of both gorgeous beaches.

Unlike Little Harbor which has some protection from waves, Shark Harbor is not a safe swimming spot. However, when conditions are just right Shark Harbor is a good surfing cove.

The Safari Bus departs from Avalon and Two Harbors and will take you here for the day. If you plan to camp at the campground, you’ll need reservations.

Catalina Express operates boats daily to Catalina Island from the mainland in Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Dana Point.
